Sustainability
|
|
Since 2003, we have continued to develop our portfolio of sustainability services to help manufacturing business deliver against environmental targets. This is the
BIG issue. |
Environmentally driven projects are an increasingly significant part of
our workload and the tools below are now deployed by James Ross Consulting in all
of the change management projects we do.
Best in Class analysis – where we assess packaging content
across product / retail categories to establish which products or formats represent
the benchmark in minimized packaging / packaging impact.
The Wal-Mart score
card – represents a great opportunity for businesses to start the data
gathering and packaging change processes. This is an area where we can help, by
deploying resource on-site project management.
Specification change – use
of higher yield materials (lower weight), alternative combinations and / or revised
structures to achieve a net reduction in cost and material packaging. This can cover primary
packaging, secondary packaging and freight.
Carbon footprint analysis – to assess
the CO2 / Green House Gas (GHG) impact of a given supply / packaging model. James Ross Consulting
works with a specialist partner organization to develop this data. We then interpret
and develop net business options for change.
Alternative materials – use of compostibles,
use of bio-polymers, use of materials from accredited sustainable sources, use of
materials with higher recyclate content.
Retail and supply chain analysis – assessment
of retail needs (can we develop merchandizing units to reduce primary pack complexity,
can we look at refill solutions or self-dispensing etc), assessment of total supply
(carbon cost, logistics cost, handling complexity, damage, wastage, labor).
Energy
usage – where do products and packs originate, where are they packed, how are they
handled, what sort of facilities are used to produce these items (are they domestic
or import).
NPD / Innovation – development of packaging design principals to maintain
lowest environmental impact. For example, use of package weight to product weight
ratio’s. |
